Delhi-6 is based on Mehra’s growing up years in Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi. The film will be Mehra’s third directorial venture after the immensely successful Rang De Basanti, which had beenselected as India’s official entry to the Oscars and critically acclaimed[citation needed] Aks.

Sonam Kapoor, daughter of Anil Kapoor, who made her debut in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, has reportedly confirmed taking part in the movie and will be paired with Abhishek Bachchan. Rishi Kapoor and Tanvi Azmi are also apart of the film. The film went on the floors Dec. 20, 2007. Amitabh Bachchan will also have a small role in the film where he will play the grandfather to Roshan, played by Abhishek Bachchan. Waheeda Rahman will play the grandmother of the same character. Gulshan Grover has been roped in to play Abhishek Bachchan’s dad in the film.

Middlesex University honours India’s brightest musical star– AR Rahman

In India, a country of a billion inhabitants, where film and pop music are one, A.R. Rahman, 43, dominates the music industry so totally that he has supplied the sound track for a whole generation. He enjoys the godlike devotion of India's youth, but everyone from the street child who sweeps train platforms to the middle-aged doctor in Mumbai's posh Malabar Hill hums his tunes.

Born in Chennai (formerly Madras) and raised on Tamil movies and music, Rahman converted to Sufism — a mystical form of Islam — in the late 1980s. It is easy to hear these influences in his work, but his genius lies in tying many forms of music together to make a sound that is at once familiar and new. He first gained widespread notice for Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Roja (1992), then branched out into Hindi films and has succeeded in making Indian film music a global phenomenon. He has worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber and with Shekhar Kapur on Elizabeth and has influenced other gifted directors like Baz Luhrmann. This year he won two Oscars, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for giving Slumdog Millionaire its frenetic sound.

Rahman is a shy and quiet man, but his music has emotional force. Renowned for his immense range, he'll do a traditional score for a conventional film, then blend exotic vocals with Japanese music and Western classical arrangements in his next project. THE GOLDEN MAN!

Rahman has done it again. He becomes the 1st Indian to win the Golden globe award, for his path breaking work in 'slumdog millionaire'. It is by no means his best work till date. He had given far more better works in many other Indian movies, but the fact that this one came in a hollywood movie made all the difference. In a way, this is a debut award for him in Hollywood as this is his first film there. The soundtrack of 'Warriors of heaven and earth' was not considered some years back because it was a chinese movie. His crossover started with the broadway musical 'Bombay Dreams'. He took it to the next level by composing for the mammoth stage adaptation of 'Lord of the rings'. Then his songs were featured in a couple of movies, most notably 'chaiyya chaiyya' in the spike lee movie 'Inside man'. Around that time, 'Roja' was selected by the Time magazine as one of the 10 best soundtracks of the last century. He conducted the Birmingham symphony orchestra some years back. The video of 'Pray for me brother' won wide critical acclaim. At the same time his Indian soundtracks were also getting wildly popular in the west. Most notably, the 'Bombay theme', which was used in more than 20 ADs across various countries, the most famous one being the French one featuring Zidane. His international concerts were sold out affairs with the foreign crowd merrily singing along the Hindi and Tamil lyrics. Then came the underdog film 'Slumdog Millionaire' and along with it a new legion of fans the world over waking up to the brilliant tunes of this short man hailed as the 'Mozart of Madras' by none other than Andrew Lloyd Webber. A.R.Rahman becomes first Indian & Tamilan to win two Oscars.
A.R.Rahman was announced winner of the Best Score for Slumdog Millionaire and Best Song for Jai Ho from the same film at the 81st Academy Awards night held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on the 22nd of February, 2009. Rahman is the first Indian to win two Oscars. Slumdog Millionaire swept the Oscars and won 8 out of the 9 categories it was nominated in. Resul Pookutty and Gulzar were the other winners from India.
